Sophie Blackall, Children’s Author and Illustrator Extraordinaire
July 15, 2011
We are sometimes slow on the uptake, especially so with Children’s materials (note to self!) but we have become fans of Sophie Blackall. Up until recently, Sophie has been an illustrator – of more than 20 wonderful children’s books including the Ivy & Bean series; see others in our catalog here, but she has recently written a book of her own: Are You Awake? in which persistent young Edward has many questions for his sleepy mother, many of which are answered, “Because it’s night time.” What parent hasn’t faced a similar situation and uttered those words, or perhaps, regrettably, something more like Adam Mansbach’s book title? Read the book to see who prevails in this particular middle-of-the-night discussion.
We, of course, recommend reading everything Sophie has put her skillful hands to, including her delightful blog. And if you prefer something more grown up, the Sopher is releasing a book in September called Missed Connections based on the blog begun in early 2009, with paintings inspired by real, anonymous messages posted online by lovelorn strangers. We applaud her perception of love at first sight in a library or book store. More please, Sophie!
