Man Booker Shortlist Announced

September 10, 2009

The Man Booker shortlist was announced the other day. You might check out our post of August 9th, announcing the longlist, to see the contenders not selected. The six books now vying for the £50,000–about $83,000 prize are:

The Children’s Book by A. S. Byatt

Summertime by J. M. Coetzee

The Quickening Maze by Adam Foulds

Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel

The Glass Room by Simon Mawer

The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters

Only The Little Stranger has been released in the U.S. currently. The Children’s Book is scheduled to be released on October 6th–the day the winner will be announced in London. Wolf Hall is scheduled to be released here on October 13th and Summertime on December 24th. The Glass Room and The Quickening Maze have not been scheduled for publication in the U.S. yet. Coetzee has won the Prize twice already for Disgrace in 1999 and The Life & Times Of Michael K. in 1983. Byatt has also won before, for Possession, in 1990. Despite their previous wins, it’s Hilary Mantel’s Wolf Hall that the bookmakers are favoring this year.
