September Is Library Card Sign-Up Month At The Essex Library

September 2, 2009

We’re celebrating September at the Library. Not only is it Rev Up Your Resume Month and Shameless Promotion Month (browse our other displays too), it’s Library Card Sign-Up Month. If you don’t believe us, check out the American Library Association’s website with Candace Parker (WNBA star and Olympic Gold Medalist) as the Honorary Chair.

There is a card in about two-thirds of Essex residents’ wallets right now that was totally free and allows them to: read and listen to millions of books, attend educational and entertaining programs, conduct research in academic databases, watch thousands of movies, learn how to and use computers with Internet connections, listen to thousands of CDs, get expert help with SAT test preparation, resumé writing and job applications, view art exhibits, borrow museum and park passes, get 24-hour reference help and read thousands of magazines and newspapers, ALL FOR FREE!

During the first week of school a handout will be sent home from Essex Elementary School for children and their parents to fill out and bring to the Library to get their Library card (if they do not already have one).  Children age 5 and older are encouraged to get their own Library card.  Stop by the Library to sign up for the smartest card of all–a Library card. Don’t let your card expire! Library cards are valid for three years from their date of issue. There is no cost for a new Library card or to renew an expired card.

If you don’t have a valid Essex Library card, there’s no better time than now to stop in and get one because we’re offering coupons for $1 off overdue fines for any new card registrations. A BIG Thank You to the Board Of Trade friends who are joining in and offering treats for anyone who stops by their shop/office in September and shows off their Essex Library card: Sweet P’s is offering a free small ice cream cone, The Community Music School has a free kazoo, the VNA is offering free blood pressure checks on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2-3 p.m. at their 61 Main St Centerbrook office, and Elite Window Treatments (13 Main St. Essex) is offering an extra 5% off window treatments for card holders. Essex Books (One Essex Square) will give 20% off purchases at the bookstore for customers who show their Essex Library Card.  Watch our website for more offers throughout September. Kids (age 5-17) who come in for a new card will also receive a special gift at the Library.
