Giller Prize Announced

November 7, 2007

The Giller Prize (Canada’s most prestigious literary prize with a $40,000 award) was announced last night in Toronto as described by the CBC. The winner is Elizabeth Hay’s Late Nights On Air. (On order at the Essex Library.) Pictured are Elizabeth Hay, left, and author Alice Munro, right. According to the CBC, Late Nights on Air is the sometimes comic, sometimes tragic tale centered on the cast of characters at a small radio station in the Canadian North. The jury hailed the book as “flawlessly crafted, a timeless story masterfully told. What a cast of characters,” said jury member David Bergen. “It’s as if she took a cast of characters and she found a room to put them in and that room is the North.”
