The Whitbread Award Is Now The Costa Coffee Award

Costa Coffee is now sponsoring what used to be The Whitbread Awards begun in 1971 by Whitbread Plc. These literary awards are given to the most enjoyable books of the year by authors who are based in the United Kingdom and Ireland. The short-listed books for 2006 were announced on November 29th. For First Novel: The Amnesia Clinic by James Scudamore; Cloth Girl by Marilyn Mills; The Meaning Of Night by Michael Cox; and The Tenderness Of Wolves by Stef Penney. For Best Novel: Black Swan Green by David Mitchell; A Spot of Bother by Mark Haddon; Saving Caravaggio by Neil Griffiths; and Restless by William Boyd. The final Awards will be announced on January 10, 2007.
